What is Keno?

Similar in style to a lottery or bingo, Keno is a traditional Chinese game that is popular in casinos.

Typically, players select their gaming numbers from a range of 1 through 80 and lay a bet. You can usually choose up to ten numbers.

20 numbers are then randomly drawn as winning numbers. Players who match all (or a combination of) numbers receive a pay-out.

The game can be played electronically using gaming machines or you can participate in live games where numbers are drawn manually.

Keno: A Brief History

Though the game is thought to have originated in China, as a means of raising public funds to help fund the building of the Great Wall of China, the widespread popularity of Keno is fairly recent.

The Portuguese territory of Maccau established a lottery in 1847 in order to generate additional income for the government. It is believed that the results of the games were delivered to remote areas using carrier pigeons. This lead to the game being called báigē piào (pronounced baak-gap-piu) which translates as ‘white dove ticket’.

The original game used Chinese characters instead of numbers and it was believed 120 of these were used instead of the 80 we commonly use today.

During the 19th century, Chinese immigrants brought the game to the West where it became known as boc hup bu and puck-apu. It was a popular game in many Chinatowns across Australia, eventually spreading to pubs and bars.

By the turn of the century, the game had become known as ‘Keno’ after the Latin/French word quine (or five winning numbers).

Governed by different rules depending on the state you are playing in, Tabcorp’s Keno offers a simple way to play and the chance to win some big prizes.

How to Play Keno

Depending on where you are playing the game, there can be deviations but typically a player can choose up to twenty numbers (or ‘spots’) on a game card. Some casinos restrict the amount of spots chosen to 10, 12 or 15.

Numbers are chosen from a range of 1 to 80 and marked off on a Keno game card which is laid out in a grid of 8 rows by 10 columns.

Once all of the game players have selected their numbers and laid a stake, twenty numbers are selected (either by random software on electronic games or via a bingo style machine).

Some Australian casinos have Keno lounges. Image via Flickr.

Players must match their selected numbers with the drawn numbers to establish whether they have matched any.

Keno Australia Payouts

Winning combinations vary by casino (even by table) or venue with pay-outs depending on how much you staked and how many ‘hits’ (or numbers matched).

Keno Odds

The more numbers you select, the greater the payout but the less chance you have of hitting you minimum winning combination.

Typically, selecting three spots in Keno gives you two winning combinations; 2 hits or 3 hits.

With the odds of winning by selecting three spots on a Keno game being 1 in 20 your chances may be good but the potential gains are low.

Selecting 10 spots gives you six possible winning combinations (5 hits, 6 hits, 7 hits, 8 hits, 9 hits and 10 hits) but a lower chance of getting a winning combination.

The odds of winning on a 10-spot card are 1 in 253 but can deliver better returns.

The probability of winning the jackpot (all twenty spots) are virtually impossible at 1 in 3.5 quintillion.

Most Keno players stick to less than 10 spots per card with those wanting to play the best game of probabilities, playing 4,5 or 6 spot games. The odds of a win on this number of potential hits is around 1 in 5.

The main lotteries run Keno jackpots exceed $1,000,000 for 10 spot wins.

Prizes for lower matched wins also vary by operator with Tabcorp’s Keno offering the following prizes for the Mega Millions game (min. $2 per play) as follows:

What exactly is keno?

Keno is a game of luck that follows a similar format to lotto, originating from an ancient Chinese lottery game. It’s a pick-and-match number game that can be played by anyone over the age of 18, and just like lotto, you don’t need to learn any special strategies or be particularly skilful to play. Given its fun and easy nature, it is a much loved game in Australia, found everywhere from the local pub to leading Internet casinos.

Rules of keno

Typically, keno consists of 80 balls that are numbered from one to 80. To play, you select up to 20 numbers which you deem to be lucky (some online games may only allow you to choose up to 15 numbers), with 20 numbers then drawn at random from the pit of 80. The more of your picks you match (which are often referred to as “catches”) the more money you stand to win.

How much you can win at keno varies between each game, with different vendors offering different pay scales. Your potential winnings are also dependent on how many numbers you choose. Given these variables, you’ll need to refer to the game at hand to suss your potential winnings. The individual paytables reflect just how much you can win based on how many of your chosen numbers are picked. For example, if you pick five numbers and three of these are picked, your payout may be 3:3, while hitting five out of those five numbers will give you a payout of 5:50.

Some games of keno also give you the option of enabling bonus bets, like placing an additional wager for the chance to multiply your winnings, or even placing a fun side bet like heads or tails. While keno is certainly designed to be a fun and easy game, don’t let its light-heartedness fool you – there is some seriously big money to be won in this game.

Where to play keno in real life

In Australia, the major keno games are run by the same corporations that run the lotteries, like Tabcorp, Tattersalls and SA Lotteries and as such, you never have to venture far to try your luck at keno. You’ll find keno games on offer in retail outlets like newsagencies and petrol stations, gaming establishments like casinos and TAB venues, plus all kinds of pubs, clubs, RSLs and sporting venues. The sheer availability of keno games around Australia speaks multitudes for its popularity, with new games beginning every couple of minutes.

When playing keno offline, you mark your selected picks on a paper keno ticket using a pencil (or can select the easy pick option where number are randomly selected on your behalf), and then hand it over to the vendor for processing. The winning numbers are then displayed on a screen and if you catch a win, you can claim your money right there on the spot.

Is there a recommended keno strategy?

One of the reasons keno is so popular is that the outcome is based entirely on luck, so it’s not intimidating to players like, for example, blackjack, which requires a certain level of skill and strategic play to increase your chances of winning. As a game of chance, there is nothing a player can do to influence the outcome of a keno draw, no matter what some desperate strategists may tell you. However, there are strategies you can employ to enhance your keno experience, for example, choosing lucky numbers that are special to you, and always betting within your means so that keno remains the fun game it was intended to be.
